A Letter from our Director- National Day of Reading, March 5th

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the recent Welcoming Schools National Day of Reading event. At this event, I had the privilege of sharing my children's book, "Be You Bravely," at a school in Colorado. The experience was truly remarkable and deeply meaningful.

The event commenced with the school principal delving into the significance of each color of the inclusive Pride flag, initiating a thoughtful discussion about kindness, diversity, and acceptance. They read "My Shadow is Purple" by Scott Stuart. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as the children eagerly participated, sharing the colors of their shadows and embracing the message that everyone is unique and valued.

Following this inspiring start, we delved into the heartfelt story of "Introducing Teddy: A Gentle Story about Gender and Friendship" by Jessica Walton and illustrated by Doug MacPherson. Witnessing attendees affirming that friendship transcends labels and identities was genuinely heartening.

The captivating journey of self-discovery and belonging in "Not Quite Narwhal" by Jessie Sima touched the hearts of everyone present. The theme of finding acceptance and love resonated deeply with children and adults alike, fostering a sense of empathy and understanding.

Finally, I had the privilege of sharing "Be You Bravely," a story close to my heart. The story follows Pandora, a dolphin who courageously embraces her transgender identity and teaches her friends about acceptance, respect, and inclusion. The overwhelmingly positive response from the audience reaffirmed the importance of representation and empathy in children's literature.

I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to Narwhal Magic Kindness for their invaluable support in providing Safe Space clings, goodie bags, and samples from our friends at Trans Tape. Your unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of kindness and understanding is commendable and greatly appreciated.

In closing, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in making this event a success. Together, we create a more inclusive and compassionate world for future generations.
